Whenever I start at a new workplace, the first thing I do is scope out places in the neighbourhood where I can sit and eat my lunch (which generally consists of dinner leftovers). Usually this involves a small park/patch of greenery, or a little sunny spot... At my current workplace (the one I work at most), I am super lucky, as there is a heritage home and garden right next door, so I get to eat my lunch in their beautiful gardens every day!
Eeep!!

Life has gotten a lot busier in the past 50 days that's for sure! I have gone from being unemployed to working 3 jobs (shop assistant in a second hand store, assistant garment technician and I'm also doing some fit modelling again). I've also been busy repaying all those coffees, beers and cocktails my lovely friends have been buying for me while I was a poor student and an unemployed lass!

Still, no excuses for my absence, I will try to be a better blogger, I have missed you all!

Below are a few pictures that have been taken since my last post.

I actually wrote this post back in July (after several large glasses of wine, so apologies about sounding like a total weirdo, but I am one, but let's leave that confession for another day haha). It's been sitting here un-posted ever since, and it's about time you all got to read it! (the only thing I've changed is the addition of a few photos).

Hello Readers!

I have a confession to make... My name isn't Lucy-Mae. Not even close! If you're a follower of my sisters blog, you may have already picked up on this, as she has used my real (!) name a few times when posting pictures of me or linking to this blog.

So I thought it was time I came clean and told you a little about Miss Lucy-Mae, and a little about myself too!

Lucy-Mae is my vintage wearing, perfectly 1950's housewife-esque alter-ego. Miss Lucy sews herself new clothes regularly, has a sparkling clean home all the time, loves to cook, always has fresh baking ready for when unexpected guests drop by, and of course is always a lady (although she is still just as slack as the real me when it comes to blogging).

On a day to day basis however, I am Saba, a business student (ok so I've actually just finished studying, but until I get my results, graduate or get a job, I will continue to call myself a student!), who wears jeans on a fairly regular basis. I do love to bake, however I don't bake as much as I'd like too, mostly because baking regularly can get pretty expensive, and also my man and I would both gain quite a lot of weight if we ate that much baking hehe! I love making myself new clothes, but I dislike actual sewing, so I have a LOT of half finished garments. And a closet full of fabric waiting to be sewn up. And two sewing machiens which take up considerable space. I actually studied sewing/pattern making, and worked in the fashion industry for a few years, but none of my jobs involved physically sewing or making patterns, and as a result my skills are now pretty rusty in both areas!

Here;s a picture of me in my usual jeans, waiting for the train (no not really, just doing some yoga.. The trains don't run on Sundays.. Ok ok, really I'm just posing for the camera as usual!) *I found this hillarious when I wrote it, looking back it's a bit lame haha!*

As for being a lady... Well, I do try. But I have a fairly filthy sense of humour. And a wee bit of a potty mouth. But I like to believe that people who don't know me very well think of me as lady like. Those that do know otherwise!

So there you have it! If there's anything else you'd like to know about Saba (or Lucy heh) feel free to ask away.

xx
Lucy

P.s. I hope I don't sound too crazy talking about Lucy-Mae in 3rd person. I may have had a few glasses of wine before writing this post!

*Since I wrote this post I actually wear pretty dresses much more often! It just required that little bit of extra effort in winter.. My next post I will post pictures of me being my usual special self.. A side you don't really get to see so much on this blog! Also I had my graduation last week eep! I am excited about a few things I am doing work-wise, and will share them with you next week some time! Scarletta Bakes just posted this delicious sounding chocolate chilli cake recipe, which she baked in glass jars. You have no idea how much this idea excites me, it's so perfect! All you need to do is put the lid on, and you instantly have cake that will travel easily. I imagine taking these cakes on picnics, road trips and to work/school for afternoon tea! I imagine this would work well with any cake/cupcake recipe, as long as the baking time is changed (Scarletta advises that the cake will continue to cook in the jar after it's come out of the oven, so it needs to be taken out a little earlier).

The below image is from Scarletta's website, do go and check out this recipe and read about baking in jars!

Do you think this idea is as great as I do? I want to go and buy some jars right now and take these cake jars on a roadtrip (sadly my bank account won't allow me to buy or do much of anything right now ugh).

xx
Only one of my good friends is particularly fit (one of those fitness crazy people who decide to make a job out of working out), so we decided to pick an easy track and do a 3 hour return trip. It turns out even the easy tracks have a gazillion steps, hence the sore muscles...
Our turning back point was the Dacre Cottage which is a tiny cottage originally built around 1850 (although it was re-built in the early 1980's). We couldn't actually go inside the cottage, as due to vandalism it is now completely locked up. It's right by the beach and surrounded by farm land and bush, it would be amazing to live here (well, maybe in a slightly larger house haha).
My dress is a 1970's one I've had for ages but have never worn before, the colour kind of puts me off. And please excuse my very unsightly sneakers! They're very old ones from when I played netball in high school, and I'm so glad I decided to wear them since the track turned out to be so muddy and slippery.

Do you have any nice walkways near where you live? There are quite a lot around the Auckland region, I really think I should check some of the others out too!

xx
Lucy
The coat in the background was purchased at last years Vintage Textile Fair, and is one I wear very often in winter. You can see it better in this post and this one as well.

I'm so excited about my (slowly) growing collection of vintage!
Have you bought anything fabulous lately?

Firstly I just want to tell you (as if you haven't figured out already) how AMAZING my older sister Malayka is. She's my sister and one of my best friends. We have always had similar interests and tastes (even when she was living overseas), and a similar temperament too (haha). She has great style and taste, has her own online shop, and is in the process of expanding this into a retail store! I happen to think she is the bees knees, and I'm sure you would too!

I know a lot of my followers are also followers of my sisters blog, so you already know what we got up to for her birthday over the weekend, but I have a gazillion photos and wanted to share some with you!

Firstly on Saturday we went to a fashion exhibition called Fashion at War, which was in the Devonport Navy Museum. It was small but very informative, I recommend you check it out if you're in the area (it runs until Sept 11th). Afterwards, we went up North Head, which is a volcanic headland in Devonport, riddled with old military tunnels. I've actually never been there before, so it was fun to explore! (This is a very picture heavy post by the way)
I also adore deep green colours, so you can imagine my excitement when I found this coat when on a thrifting mission not so long ago.

It's a touch too big for me, but I don't care, it's green, has a leopard faux fur collar and is reminiscent of a 1940's military style jacket. I'm sure this will become a regular item that appears on the blog because I love it so much!

How do you feel about leopard print?
P.s. You may have spotted me at the vintage textile fair over on my sisters blog, a post will be coming soon on my purchases from there (which I am super excited about!).Sabahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02865070404987386705noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7109527398723992330.post-63523559541780892492011-08-25T17:34:00.000+12:002011-08-25T17:34:02.865+12:00Super easy delicious Thai noodle bowl

I have to admit that I'm not the greatest cook.. Baking I find easy, but cooking is a whole other ball game, and if I deviate too much from recipes, or try to invent something totally new, well, the results are often barely edible (I once even caught my man trying to discretely put his dinner in the trash). So when I came across this ten minute Thai noodle bowl recipe over at the Gluttonous Vegan I was very excited. I adore Asian style broths (and soups, and other warm mushy comfort foods heh), and I have often made a similar dish to this involving miso, but this one is much simpler. And even more delicious!

It's also a good recipe with there's not so much in the pantry, I just used whatever vegetables were left in the fridge, in this case it was carrot, broccoli and spring onion, and because this has become my lazy day meal, I added tofu but didn't fry it first, just added it to the broth at the same time as the other vegetables. I like it best with rice noodles (which I also just cooked in the broth), a bit of extra soy sauce, and to garnish, sesame seeds and fresh coriander/cilantro, yum!

In case you missed the earlier link, the full recipe can be found here. (scroll down a bit, the recipe is there!)

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Sadly the concrete in front is actually my driveway, and directly opposite is the carport, but lucky for us only one of my neighbours left the house in her car while we were breakfasting (I live in a unit, it was a little bit awkward).

Either way it was nice! And to all of you who have yards or private balconies, I am rather jealous!

Yesterday I visited the Wintergarden in Auckland Domain. Auckland Domain is the oldest park in the city, with the Auckland War Museum situated within the park. The Wintergarden is made up of two huge glasshouses, which were built in 1913, and opened to the public in the early 1920's!
In other news, my camera broke at a rather wild (drunken) party several weeks ago, so now I have a new camera which I am still playing around with... It's a better version of my old camera so I'm happy! (although it'd be nice to have a fancy-pants camera one day too)

Hope everyone is well in blog-land, it's good to be back.
These are seriously awesome! I wish I had kids to bake these for, but instead I've been making them for my man (he's a toy collector so he's really more of a man-child), and my friends, and pretty much everyone really.

They're super simple to make, I found the recipe HERE (they're vegan, but don't even have soy milk in them, so this recipe won't require a trip to the supermarket for all you non-vegans out there! Plus I think any cupcake recipe could be used).

I do have to say I didn't use the icing from the recipe, as it required 6 cups of icing sugar... I find 3 cups of icing sugar in my icing too sweet, so 6 cups just screams diabetes to me! Instead I always use a modified version of the vegan butter-cream icing found in Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. Actually it's about time I was really honest, my wonderful bf always makes, and pipes the icing.. So I don't really know the exact recipe he uses! But I can tell you an approximate..

Vegan Butter-cream Frosting
3/4 Cup Vegan margarine
1/4 Vegetable shortening (You can sub this for margarine if it's winter, but in summer I recommend using the shortening, as it holds up better in heat).
Approx 2 cups icing sugar added slowly
A few dashes of soy milk (we actually use oat milk these days)
1tsp Vanilla

The icing sugar and milk are pretty much added until the desired consistency is reached.. I hope that is useful to anyone like me who finds a lot of vegan icing recipes a little too sweet!

This is what the cupcakes look like before they are iced.

I hope you have as much fun as I do when you make these! (Yep, I really do find them that exciting and amazing. I love novelty stuff!)

School has been a bit crazy lately, and that combined with a lack of inspiration has lead to me being a very bad blogger. But the semester finishes in a few weeks, and I've been feeling much more inspired by life again (woo!).

I feel like this song embodies my relationship to blogging so far.. Some times I have so much I want to blog about I want to write to you every day, and other times I am totally stuck for ideas and inspiration.. That's when things go oh so quiet.

And of course I have to include a little snapshot of my afternoon tea yesterday since it was so pretty (and tasty too!)

I have to admit I also haven't been keeping up with all of your blogs during the past month either, so hopefully all is well! I have lots of catching up to do, and a bunch of assignments and exams to study for, so it might just be weekly updates for the next little while.
I've been in a bit of a foul mood the past few weeks, hence my lack of posting (lets just blame my mood on the change of seasons hehe).
Things are all better now, and here are a few pictures to update you on what I've been doing since my last post!
You can't really see in this picture, but I did my hair in a french roll with curls coming out at the top (I ran out of hairspray so went for the soft romantic look hehehe).
By the way, I loved reading about what everyone else does for Easter, it's so interesting learning about other peoples traditions!
I had no idea! We're not religious, but we do have Easter traditions (which I assume are German based). I always thought everyone here in New Zealand had their own family traditions for Easter, but after asking some friends, it seems I was wrong; they don't even visit family during Easter weekend (although they did get a few chocolates when they were younger). So I am wondering... Do you have any Easter traditions?

For us, we have a breakfast on Easter Sunday at my Mum's, traditional things include hard-boiled eggs, which have been painted with crayons and food colouring (each person selects an egg, and then the tops are hit against each other.. you can only eat your egg if the shell has been broken on both ends).

Hot cross buns (we always buy them, but I did some experimenting with recipes recently, and I think next year I will bake my own), as well as pretzels and regular buns from our local German bakery (and this year some gluten free bagels).

We also of course have some Easter eggs and chocolates! When we were younger, these would be hidden in the living room, along with a gift for each child. I always loved hunting for Easter eggs!

These days happen to me every so often, and Monday happened to be one of them. Sorry about all the text, if you're not interested in reading about my day, you can skip to the outfit pictures at the end of the post!

It's Monday morning, I have a job interview at 8am, and although I got up at 6am, I am running late. It's not too much of a problem, since I planned to get there early, and now I will just be on time. Plus, I've decided to get the train instead of the bus, since the train can't get caught in traffic.

The train station is 10mins walk from my house, and as I get close, I see a train waiting. I panic and run the last 50m, only to realise the train is at the other platform. Phew. I sit down, and wait a minute or so. Then I realise I am sitting at the wrong platform, and the train across from me is MY train. This leads to more frantic running. I get to the train, and the doors are closed. At this stage I am thinking I'm not going to make it to the damn interview. But then, magically, the train doors open and they let me on! How lucky, this NEVER happens! But wait, the doors have open again, and people in the other carriages are all getting out.. What is going on?

It turns out the train has broken down, and after doing some eavesdropping, I find out it has been sitting at the this station for the past 30mins.. Shit. It's way too late to get the bus now, and I can't afford to get a taxi. Lucky for me, the next train arrives after only a 5min wait. I'm only going to be 10mins late for my interview, which isn't too bad, considering. I try to call to let the interviewers know I am running late, but the call is diverted to an automatic answering service, which tells me I am calling outside normal working hours, and to call back in half an hour.

I get off the train at my stop, and start running (whilst cursing my decision to wear heels). I have to cross the railway tracks at a pedestrian crossing to get to my interview, and when I get there, the barrier goes down, and a train arrives. And stops. Right on the damn crossing. So I wait. and wait. After 5mins I can't take it any more, and I decide to walk the long way around. Just as I get around, the barrier goes up. My poor feet are not happy.

I manage to be only 15mins late to the interview, which is amazing considering the circumstances, however it's a group interview, and the receptionist isn't sure I will be allowed in now. I am, and I decided my luck is changing. The interview goes well, until the very end. We are reminded to take our name tags off before we leave, and I tuned out for a second while I am putting my coat on, and one of the interviewers makes a joke about how if I leave my name tag on, somebody might come up to me on the street and say "Hi, how are you?!" Hearing my name, I looked up, smile and say a big cheerful "good!" The I realise she isn't actually asking me how I am. Crap. Then to top things off, my name tag falls off and lands under the table, and I have to get down on my hands and knees and almost crawl to reach it, for which I get a very odd look.

This all happened before 9am.. After the interview, there were a few more unfortunate events involving cash machines and public transport, but I think I've already written far too much!

Then it was off to my sisters to do a photo shoot for her coming-soon online vintage store, which actually went pretty well. Maybe I'd used up all my bad luck in the morning heh! I will share some of those pictures with you soon (hopefully in the next post).

Below are a few photos of what I wore on my unfortunate interview day (from which I will be very surprised if I get a call back!), the skirt is newly thrifted, I am in love with the colour! The photos were taken by my sister, in my Mother's pottery studio
The other day I made some rather tasty cheese and chive scones. They weren't dry like scones often tend to be, in fact, I think they were the best scones I have ever made!! I used the basic Edmonds recipe, with the cheese option (listed further down the page, after the basic recipe), and then instead of adding ham, I added 1 bunch of chives, and a teaspoon of smoked paprika. Oh and I actually added a little extra cheese and butter (got to counter-act my mostly vegan diet haha), and then some parmesan cheese on the top. The smoked paprika gave the scones a full, deep flavour, not un-similar to bacon (although I am not a bacon fan, it was sooo good). I totally recommend making these!

Now, my scones were actually a bit of a bribe for my friend, who drafted the collar pattern for me, as mentioned in my last post. She was also kind enough to let me trace a pattern she made herself, which will be made out of the red fabric below.. Think sweetheart neckline with a tie-top, and a pencil skirt.. I can't wait to make it, and show you the results!

It's lucky I didn't do any sewing or baking today, because it seems like I've had one of those bad-luck days where everything that could go wrong, does! I will share that story, along with an outfit post, tomorrow!

The shirt-dress pattern had a few facing pattern pieces missing, and the collar pattern was also missing.. Luckily a good friend of mine is an amazing pattern maker, and was kind enough to draft me a new collar pattern! Now I just have to actually make it heh (I don't have a sewing machine which can do button holes, so up until now I have avoided making anything with buttons).

I also bought a few 1950's & early 60's Weekend magazines from my local antiques store, which have great advertisements in them.

I also have several other sewing projects in the pipe line, but nothing is quite at a stage where it is ready to be shared with the world!

Have a lovely weekend,
I love vintage clocks, and thought I would share with you a few I have in my house. They're all wind-up ones, and although they have keys, none are wound. I did wind up two of them once, both are on different walls in the kitchen, and they tick very loudly at different tempos, which drove me crazy (but did make me do everything very quickly haha). It was so bad that we ended up having to put one of the clocks in the back room with the door shut, until it had wound itself down! So for our sanity, the clocks are now use for display only.
People are often rather confused about the time when they visit! Especially since the one clock we have going is one my grandmother gave to me when I was a child. It's wooden, with bright colours and a small picture next to each hour, which tells you what activity should be performed at what time.

Do you collect certain household items too?
My days have been filled with lots of school work, and large amounts of coffee. Because neither of those is terribly photogenic, I have been lacking blog-post inspiration and the end of daylight savings and the cooler weather isn't helping much either, I miss summer already!!

Anyway, here are a few pictures from the past week of non-school related things which were on my camera, including a great use for 1970's glass light shades I saw in a local cafe!

I also haven't been keeping up with my blog roll, so now I have loads of catching up to do, I bet you have all been busy!

What do you do when you've been too busy working to come up with anything blog-worthy? Do you have 'fall-back' topics? Or do you keep photos of things to be used when you're lacking inspiration?I want to know your secrets hehe!
Right?

I have been feeling completely un-motivated & tired lately, which I am putting down to my sugar and alcohol detox I started last Tuesday (yup that's right, no more booze and no more baking, it's so difficult! I'm aiming for 3 weeks), and it doesn't help that the Autumn is finally starting to show, the weather has been all over the place, from really humid and muggy to cold, wet and windy. Which leads to the point I was going to make, - When it rains all weekend, all I want to do is stay inside and bake!

Instead I found this great vegan food blog called Holy Cow! Vegan Recipes, which I just had to share with you all! I've only made one thing so far, but pretty much everything looks amazing and I can't wait to try out more recipes (especially the sweet stuff haha!), as an added bonus, it's not one of those vegan blogs that uses a lot of weird ingredients, so it's great for non-vegans too!

Below are a few pictures of especially delicious looking recipes which I can't wait to try!
